Matthew graduated LLB (Hons) from Auckland University before taking an LLM at Michigan University and a PhD at Cambridge University.  He worked as a Judges Clerk at the Court of Appeal of New Zealand between 1994 and 1996, qualified as a barrister and solicitor in New Zealand in 1995, and practised in commercial litigation in New Zealand from 1997 to 2000.

He is currently a Senior Lecturer and Fellow at Cambridge University lecturing in undergraduate courses on Equity, Land Law, Commercial Law and Personal Property and in the LLM course on Commercial Equity.

He is the author of Fiduciary Loyalty: Protecting the Due Performance of Non-fiduciary Duties (2010) (Hart Publishing).  A selection of his more recent publications include:
