Pupillage is a vital part in the training and recruiting of new junior tenants at XXIV Old Buildings. We offer up to two twelve months’ pupillages with funding of £40,000 per pupil. We aim to select our junior tenant from our pupils.
What we look for in a pupil
We look for candidates with strong academic qualifications (a first or 2:1 degree) though not necessarily in law, sound common sense and judgement, enthusiasm for the type of work in which we specialise, and the potential to become good advocates. We are looking for a potential junior tenant and so the selection process is rigorous.
What pupillage offers
We aim to provide pupils with thorough training in all aspects of our work and are concerned to make each pupil’s involvement both interesting and enjoyable. Pupils are likely to have several pupil masters and will spend at least three months with each of them. They may also have the opportunity to see other members’ practices, for example if there is an especially interesting case or a pupil expresses a particular interest. Typically, pupils attend court and conferences with members of chambers and are involved in legal research, writing advices or drafting statements of case.
The emphasis during pupillage is on training and preparing pupils for their future careers at the Bar. In common with other Commercial and Chancery chambers, opportunities for pupils obtaining their own work are limited.
